Overview

Malleray was a small municipality in the Jura bernois administrative district (Jura bernois) of the canton of Bern in Switzerland. Situated in the valley of the Birse river, it functioned as a local residential and industrial community until an administrative merger in 2015. The settlement retained a village character with compact residential areas, community facilities and green spaces.

Characteristics

The locality combined rural and small-town elements typical of the Jura arc: wooded hills, agricultural plots, and clustered housing around a historic core. Local infrastructure served daily needs, while regional roads and rail links connected residents to larger towns. The area shared cultural and economic ties with neighboring communities such as Bévilard and Pontenet.

History and merger

Historically part of the Bernese Jura region, Malleray administered local affairs as an independent municipality for many decades. On 1 January 2015 the municipalities of Malleray, Bévilard and Pontenet formally merged to form the new municipality of Valbirse. This consolidation reflected a broader Swiss trend toward municipal mergers aimed at improving administrative efficiency and pooling public services.

Economy, culture and legacy

The Jura bernois is known for precision industries such as watchmaking, and Malleray shared in that regional economic tradition alongside small businesses, workshops and agriculture. Community associations, local festivals and school arrangements continued under the Valbirse administration, preserving much of Malleray's local identity while centralizing municipal functions.

Notable facts

  • Malleray was part of the canton of Bern though culturally aligned with the Francophone Jura region.
  • Its merger into Valbirse on 1 January 2015 altered local governance but retained historical place names.
  • Nearby communities include Bévilard and Pontenet, now constituent parts of the same municipality.
