Malmedy — town in the Liège province of Belgium

Geography and environment

Malmedy is situated near the High Fens (Hautes Fagnes), a raised bog and nature reserve noted for peatland, moorland scenery and a cooler climate than much of Belgium. The surrounding landscape supports hiking, cycling and winter sports; its wooded valleys and plateaus are typical of the Ardennes.

History

The town has medieval roots and long-standing regional ties that distinguish it from neighbouring language areas. For centuries the locality belonged to regional principalities and ecclesiastical territories before becoming part of Prussia in the 19th century and later being assigned to Belgium after World War I along with the Eupen–Malmedy region. In December 1944 Malmedy was the scene of a wartime atrocity during the Ardennes Offensive; the episode remains an important part of local and military history.
