Overview

Bévilard was a small, predominantly French-speaking municipality in the administrative district of Jura bernois in the canton of Bern, in Switzerland. It occupied a village setting typical of the Jura region and was one of several local communities that formed the cultural and economic fabric of the Birs valley.

History and administrative change

The locality developed like many Jura settlements, with a mix of rural life and light industry. On 1 January 2015 the former municipalities of Bévilard, Malleray and Pontenet were merged to create the new municipality of Valbirse. This administrative consolidation aimed to streamline local services and strengthen planning and finance for the combined community.

Geography and transport

Set in the valley shaped by the Birs river, Bévilard enjoyed a landscape of rolling hills and mixed farmland. The village benefited from regional road and public transport connections that link smaller Jura towns with larger urban centers, facilitating commuting and local commerce.

Economy, culture and community life

The area shared the Jura’s economic traditions, including small-scale manufacturing and artisanal activities. Community life revolved around local schools, associations and cultural events typical of French-speaking Swiss villages. The merger into Valbirse sought to preserve these local traditions while pooling resources for cultural and social programs.
