Mali Federation (1959–1960)

Formation and timeline

Negotiations between leaders of both territories led to a formal union on April 4, 1959, initially within the framework of continued association with France. The Federation achieved full independence on June 20, 1960, establishing a single international personality while retaining strong national identities in each member state.

Government and leadership

Its federal institutions combined representatives from both territories. The prime minister of the Federation was Modibo Keïta, and the central administration sat in Dakar. Political life featured competing visions: some leaders favoured a centralized federal state, others greater autonomy for constituent units.

Collapse and causes

Tensions over power sharing, administrative arrangements and the pace of integration produced a rupture within months of independence. Disagreements escalated and led Senegal to withdraw from the union on August 20, 1960, after which the Federation ceased to exist and the members pursued independent paths.

Legacy and significance

Although brief, the Mali Federation illustrates post‑colonial debates about unity versus sovereignty in Africa. It is often studied as an example of early efforts at inter‑territorial federation, the challenges of reconciling national leadership ambitions, and the practical difficulties of building shared institutions after colonial rule.
