Macuata Province, Fiji

Geography and population

Macuata covers an area of approximately 2,004 square kilometres. It is a mix of coastal plains, river valleys and interior highlands typical of Vanua Levu. According to recent census information, the province had about 66,000 residents in 2017. These people live in roughly 114 villages distributed among 12 traditional districts; settlements range from larger towns to small coastal and inland villages.

Economy and land use

The province's economy is largely based on agriculture and fishing. Sugar cane cultivation and associated processing have historically been important in and around Labasa, and coconut products, small-scale farming, and coastal fisheries support many communities. Timber, subsistence crops and local commerce also contribute to livelihoods. Labasa provides markets, secondary services, and some light industry for the province.

History and society

Macuata's population includes indigenous iTaukei communities with long-standing village and chiefly structures, alongside significant Indo-Fijian communities whose ancestors arrived during the colonial era to work on plantations. This demographic mix shapes local languages, customs, festivals and religious life. Traditional land ownership and chiefly systems remain influential in social and political affairs.

The province is governed through local chiefly institutions and provincial administrative bodies that coordinate development, infrastructure and customary matters. Major topics for the area include rural development, coastal resource management and improving transport links to other parts of Fiji. Labasa remains the principal centre for education, health and commerce in Macuata.
