Location and neighbouring municipalities

Lohja occupies a location in western Uusimaa with connections to both coastal and inland areas. Nearby municipalities include Inkoo, Karkkila (Karkkila), Raasepori, Siuntio, Vihti, Salo, Somero (Somero) and Tammela. The surrounding terrain features numerous lakes and recreational countryside often used for boating, fishing and hiking.

History and administrative changes

The modern municipality of Lohja expanded through mergers in the twenty‑first century. In 2009 the former municipality of Sammatti was incorporated into Lohja, and in 2013 the municipalities of Karjalohja and Nummi‑Pusula were merged with Lohja. These changes increased the city's area and diversified its local communities while preserving many small‑town and rural traditions.

Lohja has a mix of economic activities including local services, light industry, agriculture and extractive activities tied to the region's bedrock. Manufacturing, retail and municipal services are important employers.
