Litmus paper is a dyed test strip used to indicate whether a solution is acidic or alkaline. Derived historically from lichens, it gives a quick, qualitative pH indication but is not a precise pH meter.

Litmus paper is a simple chemical indicator applied to paper that signals whether an aqueous solution is acidic or basic by a colour change. Composition and properties

Today some preparations use partly synthetic dyes for consistency. The dye is water soluble and adheres to filter paper so that handheld strips can be dipped into solutions for a quick reading.

A liquid form, litmus solution, serves the same role when paper strips are not used.
