Overview

Lincoln County is a largely rural county in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Washington. The county seat is Davenport, and according to the 2010 U.S. census the county had 10,570 residents. The area is known for wide open landscapes, low population density and an economy built around farming and ranching. For basic administrative information see the county page: Lincoln County overview.

Geography and characteristics

The county occupies part of Washington's rolling inland plains. Soils, climate and elevation favor dryland agriculture rather than intensive irrigation in many areas. Landscapes consist of broad fields, occasional coulees and patches of native grassland. Transport and storage infrastructure for grain—such as rail lines and elevators—have historically been important to the local economy. More on the state's geography is available at Washington state resources.

History

Settlement and formal organization occurred in the late nineteenth century. The county was named in honor of President Abraham Lincoln and developed as settlers converted prairie into farmland. Small towns grew up as service centers for surrounding farms. For historical summaries and records consult regional historical sources: regional history.

Economy, communities and services

The economy is dominated by agriculture—especially dryland grains such as wheat and barley—as well as livestock and related services. Small towns provide local government, schools, health care and retail. The county seat, Davenport, hosts many county functions; other communities include small towns and unincorporated settlements that support farm operations and neighborhood life. For local government and community services see county services.

Recreation, conservation and notable facts

Outdoor recreation is popular: hunting, fishing, hiking and scenic drives draw residents and visitors. Several state and local wildlife areas and public lands conserve habitat and provide access to natural areas. Lincoln County is one of the less densely populated counties in Washington, which shapes its community character and planning priorities.
