Name and geography

The name L'Île-Rousse literally means "the red island," referring to the blocky red porphyry islet off the town's seafront. The town sits within the fertile Balagne district, an area often nicknamed the "garden of Corsica" for its orchards and cultivated terraces. Sandy beaches, rocky headlands and a small marina shape its shoreline.

History

The modern town was founded in 1758 by the Corsican leader Pasquale Paoli as a port free from Genoese control; this initiative contrasted with other nearby harbours then dominated by Genoese authorities. Over time L'Île-Rousse developed as a local trading and fishing centre and later adapted to tourism as coastal travel became more common.
