Overview
Lika-Senj County (Croatian: Ličko-senjska županija) occupies a large, sparsely populated area in central Croatia stretching from the mountainous inland region of Lika to a thin strip of Adriatic coast and the northern part of the island of Pag. The county seat is the town of Gospić. It is the largest county in Croatia by area and has one of the lowest population densities; according to national census figures it had roughly 50,000–60,000 inhabitants in the early 2010s, reflecting long-term demographic decline and aging.
Geography and protected areas
The county covers high karst plateaus, deep river valleys and a fragmentary coastline with bays and islands. Two nationally significant protected areas are inside its borders: the Plitvice Lakes National Park and Sjeverni Velebit National Park. These parks preserve dramatic limestone scenery, waterfalls, endemic plants and diverse wildlife, and they attract the majority of the region's visitors. For more information on regional attractions see Plitvice and Velebit.
Administrative divisions and towns
Lika-Senj is divided into towns and municipalities; notable urban centres include Gospić, Senj on the coast, Otočac inland, and settlements on Pag such as Novalja. Coastal settlements are often oriented toward seasonal tourism, while interior towns serve as local administrative and service hubs.
History and cultural background
The area has a layered history: prehistoric habitation, Roman-era routes, and medieval towns, followed by turbulent borderland centuries during Ottoman expansion and Habsburg frontier administration. These historical processes shaped settlement patterns, fortifications and a mix of cultural influences visible in local architecture and customs.
Economy, population and infrastructure
The local economy relies on forestry, extensive agriculture, animal husbandry, and tourism linked to natural parks and seaside resorts. Economic development is constrained by rugged terrain, limited arable land and a small workforce; many communities experience outmigration and an aging populace. Transport links include regional roads and coastal routes that connect to wider Croatian networks; public services concentrate in the larger towns.
Importance and notable facts
Lika-Senj is important for biodiversity conservation, outdoor recreation and cultural heritage. Its national parks are among Croatia's best-known nature destinations and contribute significantly to the county's seasonal economy.
