Geography and communities

Langley covers a mix of suburban neighbourhoods, rural farmland and small historic settlements. History

The area’s modern history began with Fort Langley, established in 1827 by the Hudson’s Bay Company as a trading post. The 1858 Fraser Canyon Gold Rush accelerated settlement and transportation links to the region. The Township of Langley was incorporated on April 26, 1873, and over the following century grew from a rural district into a suburban component of the greater Vancouver metropolitan area.

Economy and land use

Langley retains a significant agricultural base—dairy, berry crops, nurseries and vineyards—alongside expanding residential, retail and light industrial sectors. Horse farms and equestrian facilities are prominent, and the district supports local wineries, farmers’ markets and an active agri-tourism scene.

The municipality preserves historic sites such as Fort Langley National Historic Site and hosts cultural events, fairs and community markets. Sports and entertainment facilities include the Langley Events Centre, which has been home to teams such as the Vancouver Stealth of the National Lacrosse League. For regional services and planning Langley participates in the governance structures of Metro Vancouver.

Major roads and the Trans-Canada Highway corridors provide connections to Surrey and the rest of British Columbia. The Township operates its own municipal government responsible for local planning, parks, and utilities within the district, while the nearby Canadian federal and provincial authorities share jurisdiction over broader infrastructure and conservation matters.
