The Lamborghini Murciélago is a flagship V12 supercar produced by the Italian maker between 2001 and 2010. Introduced at the 2001 Geneva Motor Show, the model replaced the outgoing Diablo and remained in production until it was succeeded by the Aventador. The name Murciélago is Spanish for "bat," continuing Lamborghini's tradition of naming road cars after fighting bulls or bullfighting themes.

Design and engineering

Designed under the direction of Luc Donckerwolke, the Murciélago blended classic Lamborghini styling cues—such as low, wide proportions and scissor doors—with modern engineering. It employed a front-mid mounted V12 engine, an all-wheel-drive system on most versions, and a combination of aluminum and composite materials for the body and chassis to balance structural stiffness and weight.

Variants and special editions

  • Coupé and Roadster body styles offered both closed and open-top driving experiences.
  • Progressive updates produced higher-output versions and lighter, track-focused editions, commonly known by model codes such as LP and SV.
  • Lamborghini released limited editions and anniversary models during the Murciélago’s run; total production reached 4,099 units, making it one of the brand’s longer-lived V12 models.

Performance and driving characteristics

The Murciélago emphasized straight-line speed and high-speed stability while also receiving suspension and brake upgrades through its lifecycle to sharpen handling. Transmissions included manual gearboxes on early cars and automated-clutch systems on later examples, reflecting the era’s move toward more user-friendly high-performance drivetrains.

Legacy and significance

As one of the first Lamborghinis developed under Audi ownership, the Murciélago helped modernize production, quality control and engineering practices at Sant'Agata.
