Perry was born in Logan, Utah and spent his early years in the intermountain region of the United States. Before his full-time church service, he pursued a career in business. As a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Perry was one of the church's most senior ecclesiastical officers. Perry participated in missionary outreach, temple dedications, and numerous leadership councils.
