History and administrative changes

At the time of independence in 1947 the area that later formed Kohat Division belonged to the Peshawar administrative region; Kohat itself was then a district within Peshawar Division. In 1976 the government reorganized boundaries and created Kohat Division as a separate entity, grouping adjacent districts for administrative convenience. This arrangement continued until nationwide local government reforms in 2000 abolished the formal divisional tier of government, removing the third tier of administration.
