Kammu Seamount (Kammu Guyot)

Kammu Seamount, or Kammu Guyot, is an extinct flat-topped submarine volcano in the Hawaiian–Emperor seamount chain of the Pacific Ocean, named for the Japanese Emperor Kammu.

Kammu Seamount (桓武海山) is a submerged volcanic mountain in the central Pacific, recognized as part of the Hawaiian–Emperor seamount chain. It is commonly referred to as Kammu Guyot because its summit is flattened, a profile typical of former islands that were planed by wave action and later sank below sea level. The feature is named after Emperor Kammu of Japan and is classified as an extinct volcano; there is no recorded recent activity and the date of its last eruption is unknown.

Kammu is a submarine volcanic structure formed by melt rising from a stationary hotspot beneath the moving Pacific Plate. When volcanism built the edifice above sea level it would have supported coastal erosion and reef growth; subsequent cooling and lithospheric subsidence produced the flat-topped summit that defines a guyot or tablemount. Geologists use terms like underwater volcano and seamount to describe such features, while the specific flat-topped variety is often called a guyot.

Age, tectonics and chain context

The Hawaiian–Emperor chain preserves a long record of Pacific Plate motion over a mantle hotspot; individual seamounts like Kammu mark volcanic episodes that occurred millions of years ago. Relative positions along the chain help scientists reconstruct changes in plate direction and hotspot activity through time. Because Kammu lies on this volcanic trail, its origin is best understood within that hotspot-track framework.

Ecology and scientific importance

Although inactive, Kammu supports deep-water habitats that differ from surrounding abyssal plains. Seamounts concentrate currents and provide hard substrate for sessile organisms, making them biodiversity hotspots and, in some regions, important for fisheries.
