John Laws (judge)

Judicial career

Laws served as a High Court judge in the 1990s and was subsequently promoted to the Court of Appeal. Officially he was a High Court judge from 1992 to 1998 and then a Lord Justice of Appeal from 1999 until his retirement in 2016. In those roles he heard significant civil and public law appeals and helped shape precedents relied upon by lower courts.

Roles and responsibilities

The offices Laws held are senior judicial appointments. High Court judges decide major first-instance cases and important interlocutory matters, while Lords Justices of Appeal review appeals and provide authoritative judgments that clarify points of law. Appointment to the High Court in the United Kingdom is customarily accompanied by a knighthood.

Personal life

Laws married Sophie Marshall in 1973; the marriage lasted until her death in 2017 and produced one daughter. He was also publicly known as the uncle of political strategist Dominic Cummings, a relationship noted in media accounts of his family.

Death and legacy

Laws died on 5 April 2020 in Chelsea, London. His death occurred during the 2019–20 pandemic and was linked to complications of COVID-19. He had been hospitalized initially for treatment of sepsis and other medical problems and died in Chelsea, London. Colleagues and commentators remembered him for long service on the bench and for contributions to appellate decisions that continue to influence English law.

Though not a frequent public figure outside legal circles, Laws' judgments and administrative work as a senior judge formed part of the body of authority developed by the courts over several decades.
