Biography and career

Burningham was born in Farnham, Surrey, England, on 27 April 1936. After training at art school and working for a time in advertising and design, he turned to picture books and illustration. Over several decades he produced a steady output of books that he sometimes both wrote and illustrated, and at other times illustrated for other authors. He died on 4 January 2019 at the age of 82 from pneumonia.

Style and themes

Burningham's illustrative approach is often described as spontaneous and expressive. He used line, watercolor washes and collage to create pages with lively textures and unforced gestures.
