History

Founded by the Rajput ruler Rao Jodha in the 15th century, Jodhpur became the capital of the princely state of Marwar. Over centuries the city grew around a fortified ridge and developed distinctive urban and courtly architecture. During the colonial era local rulers retained influence through subsidiary alliances, and many princely commissions from the 19th and early 20th centuries shaped the present streetscape and public buildings.

Landmarks and cityscape

The skyline is dominated by Mehrangarh Fort, a large hilltop fortress with battlements, museums and panoramic views of the old city. Other important sites include the Umaid Bhawan Palace, a prominent palace complex, the white marble cenotaph Jaswant Thada and the conservation area of Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park, created to restore native desert flora on the rocky ridge below the fort.
