Overview
Janusz Marek Wójcik (18 November 1953 – 20 November 2017) was a Polish footballer, coach and later a public figure. Born in Warsaw, he combined a long domestic sporting career with international playing and coaching stints, and served one term in the national parliament. He is widely remembered for leading Poland's Olympic football side to a silver medal at the 1992 Barcelona Games, an achievement that remains a high point in the country's recent football history.
Early life and playing career
Wójcik began his football education in Warsaw-based clubs and played professionally in Poland's domestic leagues. During his playing years he represented teams such as Agrykola, Gwardia, Ursus and Hutnik Warszawa. He also had brief experiences abroad, including a spell in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, and a period in Canada with the Toronto Falcons, experiences that broadened his exposure to different footballing cultures and informed his later coaching approach.
Coaching career
After ending his playing career Wójcik moved into coaching and quickly established a reputation working with youth and national age-group teams. His most notable success came as manager of Poland's Olympic squad which won the silver medal at the 1992 Olympics. The result brought him national recognition and led to further appointments at club and national level. He later held a number of club positions, including a 2008 appointment as manager of Widzew Łódź and, in 2010, a managerial role at the Omani club Al-Nahda.
National team and other posts
Wójcik's work with national teams and youth setups was a defining strand of his career. He was involved in preparing players for international competition and is credited with helping to develop a generation of Polish players who competed successfully at junior and Olympic levels. His club coaching record included work both in Poland and abroad, reflecting a willingness to take on diverse challenges across different football systems.
Political activity
Following his sporting career Wójcik entered politics. He was elected to the Sejm for the 2005–2007 term as a member of the Samoobrona (Self-Defense) party. In parliament he combined his public profile as a sports figure with legislative responsibilities, a path followed by several athletes who later took public office. His political activity formed part of a broader public life alongside continued involvement in football coaching and administration.
Later life and legacy
Janusz Wójcik remained a recognisable figure in Polish sport until his death in Warsaw on 20 November 2017 at the age of 64. He is remembered chiefly for the 1992 Olympic silver medal with the Polish team, and for a career that spanned playing, coaching and public service. His life illustrates how expertise gained in sport can translate into leadership roles both on the field and in civic life.
