Apayao — province in the Cordillera of northern Luzon, Philippines
Apayao is a mountainous province in the Cordillera Administrative Region of northern Luzon, Philippines. Its capital is Kabugao and it is home to the Isnag people and extensive forest and river systems.
Apayao is a landlocked province in the northern part of the island of Luzon in the Cordillera Administrative Region. It is one of the provinces of the Philippines and is administratively and geographically distinct from the lowland plains to its east and west. The provincial capital and seat of government is the municipality of Kabugao, which functions as the main center for administration and services.
Geographically, Apayao is dominated by mountain ranges, forested watersheds and river valleys. The Apayao River and its tributaries are key features of the landscape, supplying water for communities and supporting traditional farming systems. Large tracts of the province remain covered by primary and secondary forests, which sustain diverse plant and animal species and provide resources for local livelihoods.

The province is home to indigenous groups, most notably the Isnag (also spelled Isneg), who have their own languages, customary laws and cultural practices. Many communities maintain upland agriculture, shifting cultivation patterns, weaving, and other craft traditions. Over time, migrants from neighboring lowland regions have also settled in parts of the province, contributing to a mixed cultural landscape.
History and administration
Historically Apayao formed part of a larger administrative unit with neighboring areas; it became established as a separate province in the late 20th century. Today it is managed through elected provincial officials and municipal governments, and it participates in the regional institutions of the Cordillera Administrative Region and the national government of the Philippines.
Economy and significance
The local economy is largely based on agriculture, forestry and small-scale commerce. Rice, root crops and corn are commonly produced, while forest products and riverine resources provide supplementary income. Interest in ecotourism and conservation has grown because of the province's natural scenery, traditional cultures and opportunities for outdoor recreation.
