Geography and climate

Imereti spans lowland plains and the lower slopes of the Lesser Caucasus. The landscape is a patchwork of cultivated fields, orchards and woodland. The climate is generally temperate and humid, with abundant rainfall that supports diverse crops and dense vegetation compared with eastern parts of the country.

History and identity

The region has deep historical roots: in the medieval period Imereti developed distinct political and cultural institutions and for centuries existed as a kingdom or principality separate from eastern Georgian realms. Its towns and monasteries formed an important network for Georgian culture and Orthodox Christianity. Later, Imereti was incorporated into the Russian Empire and experienced industrialization in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Economy and transport

Agriculture remains important: grains, fruit, vineyards and other crops are widely cultivated. Imereti also has industrial and mining activity—mineral deposits and historic mining towns are found in the region—alongside light industry and food processing centered on Kutaisi. Road and rail links connect Imereti with other parts of the country, and the Rioni valley has long been a principal corridor.

Culture and notable sites

The region preserves significant medieval monuments, monastic complexes and cathedrals that are central to Georgian architectural heritage. Notable sites include historic churches and religious academies, several of which attract both local pilgrims and visitors interested in medieval art. Kutaisi functions as the region’s administrative, educational and cultural hub.

Distinctions and modern role

  • Imereti is widely regarded as one of Georgia’s traditional agricultural cores due to its fertile soils and climate.
  • Its historical separation into a western kingdom gives it a distinct regional identity within the broader Georgian story.
  • Today the region blends rural production, heritage tourism and urban industry centered on Kutaisi.
