Ilford railway station is the main rail facility serving the town of Ilford, which lies in the London Borough of Redbridge in London. It sits on the eastern suburban route out of the city and is a local stopping point on a major main line.

Layout and platforms

The station has five platforms. Platforms 3, 4 and 5 are the ones normally used for scheduled passenger services. Platforms 1 and 2 are kept in reserve and are generally brought into use only during engineering work, service disruption or when trains need to be turned back.

Rail services

Ilford is located on the Great Eastern main line. For several years the stopping metro service on the Liverpool Street–Shenfield corridor was operated under the TfL Rail brand (TfL Rail), but the Crossrail project (now known as the Elizabeth line) has superseded that operation and provides the regular stopping services into central London and beyond. Occasionally short-run or altered timetabled workings operate only between Stratford or Ilford and Shenfield, particularly during engineering works or disrupted periods.

Practical notes

  • The station functions primarily as a suburban commuter stop on the eastern approach to central London.
  • Platforms 1–2 are available for contingency or engineering-related timetables; passengers should check destination indicators and service information boards on the day of travel.
