Overview

Hypochlorous acid is a simple chlorine oxoacid with the molecular formula HClO (often written HOCl). In water it exists in equilibrium with its conjugate base, the hypochlorite ion (OCl−), and the balance between these species depends on pH. It reacts readily with organic matter and inorganic reducing agents, and it can convert amines to chloramines and oxidize sulfides, thiols and other functional groups. In aqueous solutions the active antimicrobial form is often HOCl itself rather than OCl−, because the uncharged molecule penetrates microbial cell walls more effectively. Under light or prolonged storage it decomposes, producing chloride or hydrochloric acid and oxygen in various pathways depending on conditions (stability, photodecomposition).

Production and preparation

Commercial and laboratory preparations of hypochlorous acid are commonly obtained by acidifying sodium hypochlorite solutions or by electrolytic generation of slightly acidic water. A typical laboratory route is to add an acid that is not itself oxidized (for example phosphoric acid) to a dilute solution of sodium hypochlorite; this shifts the hypochlorite/hypochlorous equilibrium toward HOCl without destroying it (sodium hypochlorite, non-oxidizable acid). Care must be taken because using an oxidizable acid can consume HOCl. Reacting HOCl with strong acids such as hydrochloric acid can release chlorine gas, so appropriate controls are required (chlorine formation).

Uses and applications

Hypochlorous acid is widely used as a disinfectant and sanitizer in healthcare, food processing, water treatment and surface cleaning because of its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. It is used to manufacture other chlorinated chemicals and is sometimes generated on-site by electrochemical devices for sanitation tasks. In biology, HOCl is produced by immune cells (neutrophils) as part of the innate immune response, where it helps kill bacteria and pathogens. Its disinfectant role is one of the principal reasons for its industrial importance (disinfectant uses).

  • HOCl is reactive and can corrode metals or damage some materials at high concentrations.
  • Mixing concentrated hypochlorous solutions with acids, ammonia or certain organics can release toxic gases such as chlorine or form chloramines; avoid incompatible mixtures.
