The unit was organised around the central urban hub of Hyderabad and contained the surrounding districts of central Sindh. Over time the precise composition and boundaries of the division changed as districts were created, reorganised or transferred; the division primarily coordinated administration, law and order, and development matters across its component districts while the district remained the main local government entity.

At the time of Pakistan's 1998 census (1998 census), the population associated with the administrative area was reported as 4,339,445, of whom about 50.07% were classified as urban. That level of urban population made the area one of the more highly urbanised parts of Sindh, reflecting the influence of the city of Hyderabad and its satellite towns.

Geography and notable features

The division covered parts of the Indus plain and nearby lowland terrain. Within the wider district area is the Kirthar National Park, a significant protected area noted for its arid landscapes and wildlife. The region combines agricultural plains with industrial and commercial zones concentrated in the city of Hyderabad.

History and administrative change

Divisional structures like Hyderabad Division were introduced during the British colonial period and retained after independence, providing an intermediate level of administration.
