Chemical nature and properties

Chemically, the solution contains molecular ammonia (NH3) in equilibrium with water and small amounts of ionized species. This can be expressed as NH3 + H2O ⇌ NH4+ + OH−, so the mixture behaves as a weak base. Its alkalinity helps dissolve organic soils, lift grease and remove some types of stains. The liquid is volatile and gives off irritating fumes, especially when warmed or concentrated.

Common uses

Household ammonia is widely used as a domestic cleaner and degreaser. Typical applications include:

Although often called ammonium hydroxide on labels, the product is not a simple salt but a solution of ammonia gas in water. It should be distinguished from concentrated laboratory or industrial ammonia solutions, which are much stronger and more hazardous. Household ammonia differs from ammonia gas; the latter is compressed and used for industrial applications.

Safety and handling

Because it is alkaline and releases irritant fumes, household ammonia requires basic precautions: use in well-ventilated areas, wear gloves and eye protection if splashing is possible, and avoid inhaling vapors. Do not mix ammonia with chlorine-containing products (such as bleach); mixing can produce toxic chloramine and other hazardous gases. Store containers upright in a cool, ventilated place away from acids and oxidizers, and keep out of reach of children and pets.
