Harry Brearley (18 February 1871 – 14 July 1948) was an English metallurgist best known for discovering an alloy that resisted corrosion and staining. Discovery and development

In the early 1910s Brearley was investigating ways to reduce erosion in rifle barrels. While testing various amounts of chromium and carbon, he noticed that some experimental samples did not tarnish or corrode when exposed to acids. He and colleagues refined these compositions, producing an alloy with significantly improved resistance to oxidation and staining. Early names included "rustless" or "stainless" steel; the term "stainless" became the common usage.

Characteristics and grades

The key feature Brearley identified was the addition of chromium to iron‑carbon alloys. Chromium forms a thin, stable oxide layer on the steel surface that inhibits further corrosion. Since Brearley’s discovery, metallurgists have developed many families of stainless steels—martensitic, ferritic, duplex and austenitic—each tailored for specific mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.
