Geography and natural features

Gunma is characterized by volcanic peaks and forested ranges such as Mount Akagi, Mount Haruna and Mount Myōgi. The high moorlands and wetlands of Oze lie along its northern edge and form a popular area for hiking in summer and autumn. Because it is landlocked, coastal resources are absent; instead the landscape supports rivers, valleys and highland marshes.

History and development

Historically part of Kōzuke Province, Gunma played an important role in Japan's industrialization. The 19th-century Tomioka Silk Mill became a symbol of early modern manufacturing and is now preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The region's transport links strengthened during the 20th century, connecting local industry to larger urban markets.

Economy, culture and specialties

Gunma's economy mixes light manufacturing (including automotive components and machinery), traditional crafts and agriculture. The prefecture is known for konnyaku products, cabbage farming in highland areas, and folk crafts such as Takasaki daruma dolls. Local festivals, some with equestrian elements, reflect longstanding rural traditions.

Tourism and notable sites

Visitors come for hot springs like Kusatsu and Ikaho, scenic mountain promenades, and heritage sites such as the Tomioka Silk Mill. Outdoor recreation—hiking, skiing and wetland walks in Oze—are popular. Takasaki and Maebashi serve as gateways, linked to Tokyo by major rail services that include high-speed trains stopping at Takasaki.
