A gully is a large channel or incision in the land surface created when surface water concentrates and removes soil. Gullies are commonly visible as deep, narrow troughs or channels that differ from ordinary small rills by their size and persistence. They form in a variety of environments where runoff is strong enough and protective vegetation is absent or disturbed.

Formation and characteristics

Gully formation begins when water from heavy rain, snowmelt or irrigation becomes focused in small depressions and begins to erode the soil. Over repeated flow events the channel enlarges by headward erosion (extending upslope), bank erosion (widening laterally) and incision (deepening). Soil texture, slope steepness, geology, land use and vegetation cover all influence how quickly a gully develops and how it evolves.

Typical features of gullies include steep sides, exposed subsoil or bedrock, and a defined channel floor. They often carry sediment during storms and can become stable only when natural or artificial measures reduce flow energy and encourage vegetation re-establishment.

Impacts and importance

Gullies are important geomorphological indicators because they represent significant soil loss and landscape change. They reduce productive land area, damage roads and infrastructure, increase downstream sedimentation, and alter natural drainage patterns. In agricultural and pastoral regions, gullies can form rapidly after overgrazing, deforestation or inappropriate tillage.

Prevention and restoration

Preventing gully development involves managing runoff and protecting soil with vegetation, contour farming, terraces, and other land-management practices that slow water and promote infiltration. Once a gully has formed, restoration techniques include regrading slopes, constructing low check dams or grade-control structures to dissipate energy, placing erosion-control blankets or brush, and replanting deep-rooted vegetation to stabilize banks.

Distinctions and notable facts

  • Gullies differ from rills primarily by scale: rills are shallow, easily erased by cultivation, while gullies are deeper and persistent.
  • They are not the same as ravines or canyons, which are typically larger and often cut into bedrock over much longer timescales.
  • Monitoring gullies is used in watershed management and soil conservation planning; aerial photos and field surveys help track their growth and the effectiveness of control measures.
