Overview
Gobichettipalayam is a municipal town in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It serves as the administrative headquarters of Gobichettipalayam taluk and is one of the principal urban centres of Erode district. The municipality was established in 1949. According to the 2011 census, the town had a population of about 60,279. Locally it has earned the nickname "Mini Kollywood" for a modest local film and theatre presence and for producing a number of regional motion pictures and cultural programmes.
Geography and administration
Administratively the town functions under a municipal council that manages civic services, planning and sanitation for the urban area and surrounding suburban settlements. As a taluk headquarters it houses several government offices that serve neighbouring villages. The town lies within the broader Kongu cultural region of western Tamil Nadu, which influences local customs, cuisine and economic patterns.
People and society
Gobichettipalayam is home to a mix of social groups typical of the region. A significant portion of the population belongs to the Kongu Vellalar community, historically associated with agriculture in the area. The town also includes people from a variety of other communities and linguistic backgrounds, including North Indian and Malayali migrants, small Gurkha groups, Mudaliar, Vanniyar, Nadar, and Dalit communities, among others. By religion the town is predominantly Hindu; the religious census of 2011 recorded around 90% Hindus, about 7% Muslims, and roughly 2–3% Christians, with small minorities following other faiths.
Economy and cultural life
The local economy combines agriculture, trade, services and small-scale industry. Surrounding rural areas produce crops and horticultural products that are traded in town markets; small textile units, rice mills and service enterprises provide local employment. Cultural life includes traditional festivals, temple celebrations and a lively performing arts scene. The town's film and theatre activity, together with local media production, led to the informal label "Mini Kollywood," reflecting a modest but visible contribution to regional entertainment.
