History and development

Godalming has roots in the Saxon era and developed through the medieval period as a market and milling centre. Water-powered mills on the Wey supported tanning, cloth fulling and other trades that underpinned local prosperity. In the 18th and 19th centuries improved river navigation and later the arrival of the railway helped the town to grow. In the late 19th century Godalming was among the early towns to experiment with public electric street lighting, reflecting its role as a forward-looking market town.
