Haslen was a municipality administrative unit of the canton Glarus in Switzerland. Located in the alpine region of the canton, Haslen functioned as a small local center for surrounding villages until a sequence of municipal mergers changed its administrative status in the early 21st century.

Location and characteristics

The settlement occupied a valley-side setting typical of central-eastern Switzerland, with nearby pastures, woodlands and steep mountain slopes. Like many communities in Glarus, Haslen had a mixed local economy shaped by agriculture, small workshops and services aimed at residents and visitors. Traditional buildings and a village core reflected the region's rural and alpine heritage.

Administrative changes and mergers

On 1 July 2006 Haslen joined administratively with neighboring Leuggelbach and Nidfurn in a first consolidation step. Subsequently, a larger reorganization of municipal structures in the canton led to a comprehensive merger on 1 January 2011. At that time Haslen and a number of neighboring municipalities combined to form the new municipality of Glarus Süd.

Significance and present-day context

The municipal consolidations in Glarus reflected a broader Swiss trend toward administrative streamlining: smaller communes combined resources for public services, planning and infrastructure. After 2011 Haslen continued to exist as a settlement and locality within the larger political entity of Glarus Süd, preserving local identity while participating in cantonal and regional initiatives.
