Giuseppe Mifsud Bonnici

Early life and formation

Bonnici came from a Maltese coastal community and pursued studies that prepared him for a career in the law and public service. Judicial career

Rising through the ranks of the judiciary, Bonnici reached the island's highest judicial office when appointed Chief Justice in 1990. During his tenure he presided over important constitutional and administrative issues and presided on panels that shaped Maltese jurisprudence. His role at the European Court of Human Rights further linked his work to broader European human rights practice and interpretation.

Alongside his judicial duties, Bonnici engaged with the philosophy of law.
