They issued influential albums that documented their evolving sound and remained closely tied to independent distribution channels, notably Dischord Records, a label co‑founded by Ian MacKaye. After a period of reduced activity in the early 2000s the band entered an extended hiatus and has not resumed regular touring.

Ethics, live shows and influence

Fugazi became as well known for their politics and business practices as for their music. They emphasized low ticket prices, minimal or no support for corporate sponsorship, and control over merchandising and recordings. Their concerts were celebrated for intensity and accessibility, with a focus on audience safety and egalitarian conduct. These principles influenced subsequent generations of independent musicians and labels.
