Francis W. Nye — United States Air Force Major General and Combat Pilot

Early life and education

Nye was born in Barton, Vermont. He pursued higher education at the University of Vermont, where he prepared for a career in military service. His generation of officers often combined university study with military training before and during World War II.

World War II and flight service

As a young aviator Nye flew B-24 Liberators and B-29 Superfortresses, two of the principal U.S. heavy bombers of the era. The B-24 was widely used in long-range strategic and tactical missions, while the B-29, introduced later in the war, served in high-altitude and long-range bombing roles. Nye's flying career earned him several decorations for aerial achievement and leadership.

In the decades after World War II, Nye advanced to the rank of major general. He commanded Field Command of the Defense Atomic Support Agency at Sandia Base, New Mexico, an organization that provided military coordination, technical support, and logistics related to the nation's nuclear weapons enterprise. His duties combined operational management with liaison work across military and civilian laboratories and facilities involved in weapons safety and readiness.

International and joint roles

In November 1968 Nye was named chairman of the U.S. delegation to several multinational defense bodies. These included the Inter-American Defense Board and bilateral defense commissions with Brazil and Mexico. In those roles he represented U.S. military interests in hemispheric defense cooperation, joint planning, and technical exchange, reflecting a Cold War emphasis on partnership and interoperability across the Americas.

Later life and legacy

Nye's career spanned combat aviation, nuclear support command, and international military diplomacy. He lived to be a centenarian; his wife Nina predeceased him in 2017. Francis W. Nye died on January 13, 2019 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, leaving a record of wartime service and peacetime leadership.
