Born in Juiz de Fora, in the state of Minas Gerais, Melo made the move to the United States as a teenager to continue his education and basketball development, graduating from high school in 2010 before playing college basketball.

Melo joined the Boston Celtics of the NBA and spent time on the active roster as well as assignments to the NBA Development League. After a brief North American professional stint he returned to Brazil and played in the country’s top league, the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB), turning out for clubs including Brasília and other teams across the league.

Coaches valued him for size and positional play, and his career illustrates the path of international prospects who move between collegiate, NBA and domestic professional basketball environments.
