Fabio Mamerto Rivas Santos (11 May 1932 – 11 August 2018) was a Dominican Roman Catholic prelate who led the Diocese of Barahona for more than two decades. Born in the village of Cabirmota in the province of La Vega, he entered the priesthood in the mid-20th century and was ordained in 1965.
Early life and ordination
Rivas Santos was born in 1932 in a rural area of the Dominican Republic. Like many priests of his generation, he would have received formation in local seminaries before ordination; he became a Roman Catholic priest in 1965 at the age of 33. His early ministry included pastoral work typical for diocesan clergy: celebrating the sacraments, parish leadership, and engagement with local communities.
Episcopal ministry in Barahona
In 1976 Rivas Santos was named bishop of the Diocese of Barahona, a jurisdiction that covers the southwestern portion of the Dominican Republic. As bishop he carried responsibilities for pastoral care, administration of the diocese, formation and assignment of priests, and the oversight of diocesan institutions. His episcopate, spanning the late 1970s through the 1990s, coincided with social and economic changes in the country and placed local church efforts for education, charity, and social outreach at the center of diocesan priorities.
Resignation and later years
After serving as bishop from 1976 until his resignation in 1999, Rivas Santos retired from active governance in accordance with canonical norms for episcopal retirement. In retirement he remained a figure within the Dominican Catholic community. He died on 11 August 2018 in Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic, at the age of 86.
