Overview

The Abbey Library of St. Gallen, known in German as the Stiftsbibliothek St. Gallen, is a historic monastic library in the city of St. Gallen in Switzerland. Attached to the former Benedictine abbey, it remains one of the oldest and most important surviving libraries in Europe and the oldest in Switzerland. The abbey and its library were major centers of learning in the Middle Ages.

Collections and holdings

The library's holdings document many centuries of intellectual activity. Highlights include:

  • Approximately 2,100 medieval manuscripts and large numbers of liturgical and scholarly codices (manuscripts).
  • About 1,650 incunabula and early printed sheets dating from the period when printing first spread across Europe (incunabula).
  • Modern collections of some 160,000 books, periodicals and specialised research materials.

History and development

The library grew from the abbey's scriptorium and study traditions established around the early medieval period. Over centuries the monastic community collected, copied and preserved texts drawn from theology, law, medicine, classical literature and liturgy. Its continuity of preservation explains why the library retains uniquely complete medieval codices and drafts that illuminate monastic scholarship and book production in Central Europe.

Building, art and public role

The reading room is a celebrated architectural and artistic ensemble dating from the 18th century and noted for its ornate Rococo decoration and book-lined galleries. The abbey precinct, including the library, is recognised for its cultural value and is protected as a world heritage ensemble. The complex attracts scholars, conservators and visitors while continuing to function as a research library.

Notable items and research importance

Among the library's treasures are several manuscripts of European renown, including a principal witness to the Nibelungenlied and the famous medieval architectural drawing known as the Plan of St. Gallen. These items are central to studies of medieval literature, art history and the history of architecture.

Access, digitisation and services

While some rare items are available only to qualified researchers, the library supports scholarship through reading-room access, exhibitions and digitisation projects that make images and catalogues broadly available online. For further information on visiting, catalogues and research services see the institution's official pages and catalogues (library, country overview, medieval studies, manuscript list, incunabula catalogue, local name, city guide, notable manuscripts).
