EADS Harfang (French reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle)

Design and components

The Harfang combines a high-aspect-ratio wing, a fuselage optimized for sensor payloads, and a pusher-propulsion layout to reduce interference with observation sensors. Its mission bay accommodates electro-optical and infrared imaging systems and can host communications relay or signals intelligence equipment. Ground-control stations handle command, data links and imagery exploitation so operators can task the aircraft and receive live feeds.

Development and operational history

Developed by EADS (now part of Airbus Defence and Space) from licensed Israeli designs, the Harfang entered French service to fill an ISR gap and has been deployed in overseas operations. It was used to provide theater-wide situational awareness, monitor ground movements and support coordination between air and ground units. Lessons from its deployments informed upgrades to sensors and command-and-control elements.
