Overview

Alofi is the capital city and main settlement of the island nation Niue, located in the Pacific Ocean. It serves as the administrative centre of the country and is where many government offices and public services are concentrated. The name is used for the urban area that contains the island's primary commercial and civic functions.

Population and role

The settlement is small by international standards and population figures have varied between sources. For example, a 2014 estimate put the number of residents at around 1,000. Alofi remains the island's principal hub for administration, trade and basic services, even though much of Niue's population lives in other villages across the island.

Layout and facilities

Alofi is traditionally described in terms of two adjoining areas, often referred to as Alofi North and Alofi South, which together form the town used for government, commerce and community events. Because Niue is a small, remote island, the town’s infrastructure focuses on meeting the needs of local residents and visitors rather than large-scale urban development.

As the seat of government and the island’s main service centre, Alofi plays a central role in Niue's political and economic life.
