Overview

The Dudh Kosi (literally "Milk River") is a mountain river in eastern Nepal that descends from high Himalayan terrain toward the plains. It is one of several tributaries whose waters contribute to the greater Kosi River system. The name reflects the pale, often sediment-laden appearance of the water in some seasons and in local Nepali usage: dudh means milk and kosi denotes a river.

Course and characteristics

The river flows generally from the high northern slopes down toward the south, passing steep valleys and broadening as it collects runoff. In its upper reaches the Dudh Kosi runs through rugged, glaciated landscapes and near famous trekking corridors; lower down it joins other streams to form the network known as the Kosi basin. The river has a strong seasonal variation in flow, with higher volumes during the monsoon and spring melt.

Names, etymology and local geography

The common English name is rendered as "Dudh Kosi" or sometimes "Milk-Kosi River." Local place names and maps often identify the river and its tributaries with Nepali terms. For general location and map references consult regional sources: regional overview, north-south flow, and river direction. The river lies in eastern province of Nepal.

Role in the Kosi system and hydrology

Dudh Kosi contributes to the hydrological complexity of the Kosi river network. It joins with other streams and rivers to feed the larger Kosi, which in turn is an important tributary of the Ganges basin. For information about its connection to the main Kosi channels see Kosi River studies. Hydrologists and regional planners monitor such tributaries because they affect flood risk and sediment transport downstream.

Human uses, ecology and hazards

Communities along the Dudh Kosi depend on its water for irrigation, domestic use and sometimes small-scale hydropower. The valley is also important for trekking and local tourism. At the same time, steep gradients, glacial melt and heavy monsoon rains make sections of the river susceptible to floods, landslides and rapid sediment pulses. Conservation and sustainable use are topics of local concern; see local environmental summaries at environmental link and conservation link.

Notable facts and distinctions

  • The Dudh Kosi is distinguished by its origin in high-elevation terrain and its role in popular trekking routes.
  • Its seasonal variability and sediment load give it the descriptive "milk" name in Nepali.
  • As part of the Kosi network, changes in the Dudh Kosi can influence flood and sediment dynamics downstream.
