Overview

Dong Hoi Airport is the principal civil airport serving Dong Hoi city in Quảng Bình Province, in central Vietnam. It lies about 6 km north of the city center and roughly 500 km south of Hanoi. The facility provides a regional link for residents and visitors and is an important access point for tourists visiting Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng National Park, a nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site. For general information about the surrounding city see Dong Hoi.

Location and physical data

The airport coordinates are 17°30′54″N, 106°35′26″E (WGS‑84). Positioned in a suburban area just outside downtown Dong Hoi, the airport occupies a site chosen for convenient road access to coastal resorts and the province’s principal attractions. Ground transport between the terminal and the city includes taxis and private vehicles; local authorities have planned incremental improvements to connect the site to regional roads and tourism routes.

Facilities and capacity

The passenger terminal and airfield were designed to serve regional traffic. At peak times the terminal can accommodate around 300 passengers per hour, with an annual handling capacity reported at about 500,000 passengers. Facilities are modest and focused on short-haul services: a single passenger terminal with basic check‑in, baggage handling and passenger amenities intended for domestic flights and charter services serving Quảng Bình Province.

History and development

Construction of the airport began in September 2004 and was completed in May 2008. The airport commenced operations on 18 May 2008 when the inaugural flight arrived from Hanoi. Its opening reflected a broader regional development strategy to improve connectivity for central Vietnam and to support growth in tourism, especially to natural attractions such as Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng.

Role and significance

Dong Hoi Airport functions primarily as a regional gateway linking Quảng Bình with larger Vietnamese cities and as an entry point for international visitors who transfer domestically. The airport supports local economic activity by facilitating tourism, business travel, and emergency services when needed. Its proximity to coastal areas and the national park increases its importance beyond the city itself.
