Academic positions

Over several decades Robinson held a variety of university posts in the United States and abroad. His appointments included teaching and research roles at institutions such as:

Research themes and writing

Robinson wrote and lectured on moral psychology, the philosophy of mind, the history and foundations of psychology, and ethical theory. He emphasized how empirical findings from neuroscience and psychology interact with traditional philosophical questions about moral agency, freedom, and the nature of consciousness. He produced scholarly essays, public lectures, and recorded courses designed to make philosophical issues accessible beyond professional audiences.

Public engagement and media

In addition to scholarly work, Robinson contributed to broader public understanding of the mind. He served as a principal consultant to the PBS and the BBC on televised series about brain and mind, and he recorded lecture series for The Great Courses that introduced philosophical problems to general listeners. His media work reflected a commitment to cross-disciplinary dialogue between philosophers, psychologists, and neuroscientists.

Legacy and later life

Colleagues and students remember Robinson for combining clear exposition with a deep interest in human values and the empirical study of mental life. He balanced technical philosophical argument with accessible teaching and public scholarship, influencing both academic and popular conversations about cognition and ethics.

Robinson died on September 17, 2018 at the age of 81; reports attribute his passing to heart failure. His career remains an example of a philosopher who engaged both the academy and the wider public sphere.
