Early life and background

Habbema was born in Amsterdam, in the province of North Holland, Netherlands. Details of her early training are less documented in general sources, but contemporary accounts describe her as part of a generation of Dutch performers who crossed borders to work in other European film industries during the Cold War era.

Career and notable work

From about 1968 through 1984 Habbema appeared in a series of films produced by DEFA, the state-owned studio of East Germany. Her filmography includes a mixture of art-house and genre pictures. She is often cited for performances in films such as To Grab the Ring (1968), the science fiction title Eolomea (1972), The Incorrigible Barbara (1977), Apprehension (1982) and the Dutch drama A Question of Silence (1982).

Characteristics and screen presence

Habbema's on-screen style has been described as versatile: she was able to adapt to different cinematic traditions, from DEFA's socially conscious dramas to Dutch ensemble pieces. Critics and colleagues noted her clear diction and expressive restraint, qualities that suited both stage-derived roles and intimate film work.

Legacy and death

Cox Habbema is remembered for bridging Dutch and East German cinema during a period when such cross-border careers were uncommon. Her participation in notable DEFA productions helped introduce Dutch acting talent to a wider Central and Eastern European audience. She died in Amsterdam on 18 April 2016 of cancer, aged 72.
