Compact Disc single (CD single)

Characteristics

CD singles vary in size and content. Two familiar physical formats are the 8 cm (often called "mini CD") and the standard 12 cm disc. A short single might contain only the lead song and an instrumental or remix, while a maxi single can include several remixes, live versions, or extended edits. Packaging ranges from simple cardboard sleeves to full jewel cases with artwork and liner notes.

History and development

The format emerged after the Compact Disc became established for albums. Record companies used CD singles to promote individual tracks and to provide collectors with alternate versions. In many markets the CD single gradually supplanted the 7" vinyl and cassette single, particularly as CD players became common in homes and cars.

Uses and significance

Artists and labels used CD singles for promotion, chart eligibility and revenue. Radio edits and promotional copies circulated to stations, while commercial singles offered fans extra material not found on albums. For collectors, limited editions, coloured discs and regionally distinct tracklists made some CD singles sought after.
