Career and positions

Dines held senior editorial and managerial roles at several leading Brazilian publications and media groups. His experience combined newsroom leadership with magazine publishing and international assignments. Notable roles included:

• Editor-in-chief of Jornal do Brasil for twelve years, where he shaped editorial practice and newsroom standards.
• Coordinator of the Rio de Janeiro branch of Folha de S.Paulo, overseeing coverage in Brazil’s largest city.
• Director at Grupo Abril in Portugal, where he led the launch of the Portuguese edition of the business magazine Exame.

Teaching and media criticism

Alongside his editorial work, Dines was active in journalism education from the early 1960s onward. He taught generations of reporters and occasionally served as a visiting professor, including a stint at the Columbia University School of Journalism in 1974 (Columbia University).

He is particularly remembered for founding and hosting Observatório da Imprensa, a project that used television and a later online platform to analyze news coverage, media ethics and the public role of journalism. That project helped popularize systematic media criticism in Brazil and provided a model for public scrutiny of news organizations.

Later years and legacy

In his later years Dines continued to comment on press freedom, journalistic standards and the relationship between media and democracy. He died in Rio de Janeiro on May 22, 2018 at the age of 86 from pneumonia. His legacy endures in the institutions he led, the teachers he influenced and the sustained public discussion about the ethics and responsibilities of the press.
