Alberto Ongaro (22 August 1925 – 23 March 2018) was an Italian journalist, novelist and comics writer. Born and raised in Venice, Ongaro worked across several medium: as a foreign correspondent, a contributor to children’s comics and a writer of historical-adventure novels. He sometimes published comics scripts under the pen name Alfredo Nogara.
Career in journalism and comics
Ongaro began his professional life in journalism and magazine publishing. He was a correspondent for the Italian weekly L'Europeo, covering foreign affairs and cultural topics, and he wrote for the influential children's magazine Il Corriere dei Piccoli. In the comics field he produced scripts and stories that combined dramatic plots with visual sensibility, bringing narrative techniques from reportage into sequential art.
Novels and literary work
Parallel to his journalism, Ongaro developed a career as a novelist. He favored historical settings and adventure plots, often evoking the atmosphere of Venice and the wider Mediterranean world. Notable books include La taverna del doge Loredan (1980), La partita (1986) and Il ponte della solita ora (2006). His fiction is marked by careful period detail, brisk pacing and a concern for character within turbulent historical moments.
Themes and style
Ongaro’s writing reflects two main influences: the eye of a reporter and the storyteller’s love of adventure. His prose often blends factual observation with imaginative reconstruction, giving novels a grounded feel even when they dramatize historical episodes. Venice appears repeatedly as setting and inspiration, its streets and canals used to evoke atmosphere, memory and social complexity.
Legacy and later life
Ongaro remained associated with Venetian culture throughout his life. He continued to publish and to be read by audiences interested in historical and adventure fiction until his final years. Alberto Ongaro died in his native city on 23 March 2018 of pneumonia, at the age of 92 (report). He is remembered for bringing journalistic clarity to historical storytelling and for contributions to postwar Italian comics and literature.
