Christ Church is one of the eleven parishes that make up Barbados. Located at the southern tip of the island, the parish covers about 57 km² (22 sq mi) and combines residential neighbourhoods, tourist corridors and agricultural land. It is administered as a civil parish and named in the tradition of Anglican parish designations; the parish church and community identity date from the island's colonial period. For an overview of Barbados' administrative divisions see parish information.
Geography and transport
Christ Church has a varied coastal landscape of sandy beaches, rocky headlands and shallow reef systems that attract swimmers and snorkelers. The island's main air gateway, Sir Grantley Adams International Airport, lies within the parish and connects Barbados with regional and international destinations. The parish's southern position gives it relatively easy access to other parts of the island by road and makes it a frequent arrival point for visitors.
History and community
The parish structure in Barbados dates to the colonial era when Anglican parishes were used for local administration. Christ Church evolved around its parish church and coastal settlements. Over time small towns and fishing villages such as Oistins developed a mixed economy of fishing, local commerce and, increasingly, services for visitors.
Economy, tourism and culture
Tourism is a major contributor to the local economy. St. Lawrence Gap, commonly called "the Gap", is one of the island's liveliest entertainment strips and features restaurants, bars and nightclubs frequented by both locals and tourists. The parish contains a mix of hotels, guesthouses and private residences, and many small businesses cater to beachgoers and airport traffic. Traditional events, local markets and the well-known Oistins fish fry are part of the social fabric.
Environment and notable sites
Christ Church includes important natural areas and community landmarks. The Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary surrounds one of the remaining mangrove wetlands on the island and provides habitat for birds and other wildlife; it is often cited in conservation discussions. Other notable places in the parish include Oistins, St. Lawrence Gap and several popular beaches that draw visitors for swimming and watersports.
