Chubut Province — central-eastern Patagonia region of Argentina

Geography and climate

The province displays a sharp east–west gradient: the western margin abuts the Andes and receives more precipitation, supporting forests and lakes, whereas the eastern half is a dry steppe of windswept plains and shrubland. Coastal waters are cold and nutrient-rich, fostering important fisheries. Chubut borders the province of Río Negro to the north, Santa Cruz to the south, and shares a long western frontier with Chile.

History and population

Indigenous peoples such as the Tehuelche traditionally inhabited the area before European and Argentine settlement. In the mid-19th century Welsh settlers established communities along river valleys, leaving a cultural legacy visible in place names and local traditions. Population is concentrated in coastal cities and river oases formed where water allows agriculture.

Economy and uses

Chubut's economy mixes natural-resource activities and services. Oil and gas production around Comodoro Rivadavia and adjacent zones has been important since the early 20th century. Sheep ranching and wool remain part of the rural economy, while fishing and aquaculture exploit the productive continental shelf. Tourism, driven by wildlife watching (notably baleen whales and marine mammals), Andean recreation and cultural tourism, contributes growing revenue.
