Alasdair Gray (28 December 1934 – 29 December 2019) was a Scottish writer and artist. His first novel, Lanark, published in 1981, was written over almost 30 years. It was described by The Guardian as "one of the landmarks of 20th-century fiction."

Gray died at a hospital in Glasgow of pneumonia-related problems on 29 December 2019, a day after his 85th birthday.
