Geography and natural features

Chelan County spans from the eastern slopes of the Cascade Range into arid interior valleys. History and name

The county's name derives from a local Salish-language word associated with the lake and its people. Indigenous groups have long inhabited the area, and Euro-American settlement and agricultural development expanded in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Over time the economy diversified beyond subsistence and small-scale ranching.

Agriculture remains important—particularly tree fruit such as apples, pears and cherries—supported by irrigation. Hydropower, timber, and a growing wine and hospitality sector also contribute to the local economy.
